The End of Fighting

The Germans hoped to win the war on the western front before the Americans could bring their troops to Europe. Germany launched a series of attacks against French and British troops in France and Belgium. The Allies suffered severe losses but managed to stop the Germans. In June and July the first Americans, together with the British and French started to advance and drive the Germans back.

By autumn of 1918 the Allies had won almost every battle. Ottoman forces surrendered to the British in the Middle East. Italy defeated Austria-Hungary in one of the last major battles of the war. In November of 1918 both Austria-Hungary and Germany signed an armistice. Germany agreed to move back from the land it had taken. It also surrendered most of its weapons and other war materials to the Allies.

The Germany population was angry at its government. Riots and rebellions started all over the country. Finally, the German Kaiser, Wilhelm, gave up his throne and fled to the Netherlands.
